Pollution Prevention Projects & Accomplishments

Puget Soundkeeper Alliance is committed to working with the marine industry and the marine community to protect Puget Sound waters and ensure a healthy environment, healthy economy, and recreational enjoyment for residents. We have a long history of successful marina and boater related projects. Note: Items in parentheses indicate funding sources.

Clean Marina Washington Coalition brings EnviroStars Certification to Washington State Marinas, 05-06
(WA State DOE and King Co. DNR/Splash)

A Clean Marina Designation indicates that a marina is in full compliance with environmental regulations, has voluntarily adopted additional environmental practices and has passed a rigorous certification inspection by county pollution experts.  In Washington, a Clean Marina certification indicates that the facility has also been certified as an EnviroStars business.  The EnviroStars program, an incentive-based pollution prevention certification program administered by County governments, rewards businesses that take voluntary steps to reduce pollution, with particular focus on hazardous waste management and reduction.

The Clean Marina program represents a 3-way partnership between the recreational boating industry, represented by the Northwest Marina Trade Association, Puget Soundkeeper Alliance and the EnviroStars Cooperative.  Washington's first Clean Marina flag was awarded to Elliott Bay Marina honoring the marina's 10-year history as an environmentally responsible marina.  Along with Elliott Bay Marina, the partnership also recognizes Shilshole Bay , Port of Blaine, Brownsville, Stimson, Foss Waterway, Breakwater and Chinook Landing Marinas as EnviroStars-Certified Clean Marinas.  At least 4 additional marinas have certifications pending.  >>>Read more about the Clean Marina program.

The EnviroStars Cooperative serves Jefferson, Whatcom, King, Pierce and Kitsap Counties and over 600 businesses are currently certified as EnviroStars.

Sound Information: A Boaters' Guide
(WA State Parks and West Marine funding)
PSA publishes a 70 page Boaters' Guide containing helpful information on boating environmental issues, solutions, resources, Pumpout Maps, Boatyard listings, etc. We have printed and distributed over 110,000 free Boaters Guides to boaters through marinas, yacht clubs, power squadron classes, marine stores, and boat shows.

EnviroStars Marina Outreach Project, 01
(King County DNR funding)
Intensive outreach to King County marinas, NMTA, and yacht clubs about the EnviroStars Program and the opportunity for marinas and yacht clubs to receive technical assistance concerning hazardous waste prevention and reduction and receive EnviroStars certification when they meet EnviroStars criteria. Worked in depth with Shilshole Bay Marina, Des Moines Marina, and the Port of Edmonds. Coordinated marina training for the 6 county EnviroStars Cooperative.

Clean Boating and EnviroStars Project, 01
(Seattle Public Utilities, EnviroStars, Port of Seattle in-kind funding)
PSA and King County EnviroStars Program worked with Shilshole Bay Marina on their EnviroStars certification process. Shilshole Bay was awarded a 5 Star EnviroStars rating at the National Clean Boating Campaign Celebration Event held at Shilshole Bay Marina. Shilshole Bay Marina developed new on-the-dock storage guidelines, collected hazardous materials and wastes from their tenants, and encouraged clean boating practices by all their tenants.

King County Clean Boating Project, 99-00
(King County Waterworks Grant funding)
Developed a new waterproof clean boating tips brochure for owners of small, trailerable boats. PSA, and partners such as King County Parks, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Save Lake Sammamish group, distributed the brochures and oil absorbent pads at King County boat ramps and parks.

National Clean Boating Campaign Project, 98-99
(Ecology PPG funding)
PSA met with marine industry and trade association leaders at a conference in Rhode Island to design the first National Clean Boating Campaign (NCBC). PSA became the NW Region Coordinator and developed and conducted the first NCBC Celebration in Seattle. Bell Harbor Marina and Shilshole Bay Marina both hosted "Kick Off" events that included educational booths and demonstrations of clean boating techniques and products.

New Boaters Kits Project, 97-98
(Ecology PPG funding, plus WA State Parks and West Marine)
Partnering with the Northwest Marine Trades Association, we designed and created a orange plastic drawstring bag 'KIT' containing relevant environmental and safety information for new owners of boats. The kits were provided free to NMTA boat dealers to distribute to new owners when they purchased a boat.

Boatyard Stormwater Sampling Workshops, 97-98
(Ecology fines of non-compliant boatyards funded these)
PSA designed and conducted 3 Puget Sound wide Stormwater Sampling Workshops for Puget Sound boatyards. Boatyard owners learned about current regulations, sampling techniques, and schedules for sampling.

National Clean Boating Campaign - National Celebration in San Francisco
(MEEF and National Parks Service funding)
Pat Pearson, PSA Pollution Prevention Programs Director and board member of the national Marine Environmental Education Foundation (MEEF) was the NCBC Celebration Event Coordinator for the national event held at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Partnering with the Port of San Francisco, we created a combination event celebrating the Grand Opening of the Hyde Street Commercial Fishing Harbor and the National Clean Boating Campaign. Exhibitors from around the country demonstrated the latest in clean boating technology.

Commencement Bay Boatyard, Marinas, and Boaters Project, 96-97
